Baron Samedi is the head of the family of Gede. The Gede are a separate group of beings within the lwa. They are a family of spirits that are concerned with all aspects of death. This includes aiding the living when they lose loved ones, helping the deceased make the transition to the next world and assisting the living in contacting their ancestors. Though often seen as grim subject matter, the Gede deal with death in a number of ways, including taking on the role of tricksters. In this way they are able to help the living face their own mortality.
The Baron is a powerful spirit who controls all passage between the worlds of the living and the afterworld. In order to communicate with the dead, you must first go through Baron Samedi. If you wish to contact the deceased for information or favors, you must first gain his permission; otherwise, the gates will remain closed.
The Baron's sacred day is Saturday. Black and purple are the colors associated with him. He is a dapper dresser and appears wearing a top hat, old-fashioned frock coat with tails and a pair of striped trousers. He carries a fancy cane or walking stick, wears sunglasses and usually smokes a cigar or cigarette. The Baron can be found at the entrance to every cemetery and the iron cross above the entrance is placed there in his honor. The cross is one of the Baron's symbols and this tradition was brought to America from Haiti. The Baron likes to receive gifts; he prefers to receive black coffee and bottles of rum from his followers or those who petition him. His favorite foods are black chicken or goat, grilled peanuts and salted herring. He is a popular figure among mediums and others who work with the spirit world. He is also an important figure with those who practice Sorcery. He controls dark forms of conjuring involving zombies and the dead. He controls the magic of the night. All types of death magic must first go through the Baron in order to work. His followers often perform their workings at cemeteries, the best place to get in touch with the energy of the Baron. This may all sound a bit grim; however, it is important to remember that the Baron may also delay or prevent death if he is persuaded to leave the gate shut.
